7th Grade Giver Test / QUIZLET IS AWESOME!

The Giver unit is wrapping up now and the seventh graders should be preparing for the test on the whole book. The test will take place on either November 13, 14, or 17, depending on which class they are in and how well they grasp the material during review. In my experience as a teacher, the biggest problem area when it comes to test-taking is in vocabulary.

They have been given a list of 30 vocabulary terms (narrowed down from 80) and also the papers with ready-made flashcards on it. If they find flashcards helpful as a studying tool, they should cut across the solid line and then fold the papers in half to have the terms and definitions as flashcards.

The terms are on the website Quizlet.com. If you search for MissJohnson11, you will find any lists I have made for academic purposes. Here is the direct link for The Giver : http://quizlet.com/57023059/the-giver-flash-cards/

Ready for my rant about how awesome Quizlet is? Here we go...

Quizlet is super cool for various reasons.
I. Online - you can study the terms with in a variety of ways
  A. Flashcards
     1. You can change how you are viewing it. (Definition, term, both)
     2. You can have it read it to you!!
     3. You can change it to how it suits you.
  B. Learn
     1. Type in the words to the definitions that are given.
     2. Go through it and it keeps track of which ones you know.
     3. You can override it as correct if you misspelled it or had a different ending
     4. Sometimes you just need a couple tries and you've got the whole list down.
  C. Speller
     1. Type the words after they say it. It gives the definition beside it.
     2. If you struggle with spelling and it's something you're graded on, this helps - big time!
  D. Test
     1. Edit the question type and test yourself!!
     2. Gives multiple options: multiple choice, written, matching, true/false
     3. You can customize the test to how the instructor will test you!
          a. I like to do matching, multiple choice, and true/false
     4. You can print if off or do it online.
  E. Scatter
     1. This one is a game where you drag the term and definition to each other to make them disappear
     2. Students get pretty excited about beating their previous time. (Excellent for the competitive type!)
     3.  It changes out the words if you play over and over and soon you'll cycle through all the words and know it all!
  F. Space Race
     1. This is also a game. You type either the words or definitions before it hits the right side of the screen.
     2.  You have 3 lives and can gain more when you are typing correctly.
     3. It gets faster and faster and you gain lives as you go through the list.
II. There's an App too!
  A. Flashcards
  B. Learn
  C. Match
     1. This one is also a game similar to Scatter-mode, this one is timed and you try to match the terms and definitions and beat your previous time.
     2. The difference between Scatter-mode and Match is that you don't have to drag, you just tap.

You can create an account and make your own word lists for any subject. It's pretty awesome and it makes studying a little more fun.
